Canine Officer Opens Gate with His Paw to Rescue Partner! [Blog Post]

K9 officer Lex

I love a story where the dog becomes hero of the day.

I love a story where the dog becomes hero of the day and a K9 police officer with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado became just that when he saved a deputy who was fighting with a suspect.

It happened when the sheriff's deputy responded to a trespassing call around 1 a.m. on Saturday, August 5. While on the call, a man the deputy was talking to jumped a fence to get away.

The deputy followed in pursuit of the suspect. This left Lex, his canine partner, on the wrong side of the fence.

But no problem for his smart pup partner.

As the suspect fought with the deputy, officer Lex unlatched the gate with his paw. He came to the assistance of his human partner and the suspect, 25-year-old Gabriel Steven Garcia, was apprehended and booked into the Adams County Detention Facility.

The deputy was injured in the fight and is home recuperating.

“Our deputies view canine Lex as a hero for saving the day. We appreciate everyone in the K-9 Unit and their hard work to keep us safe,” said Adams County Undersheriff Harold Lawson.

Three-year-old Lex, certified in narcotics and police patrol, is a Belgian Malinois who has served with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office since February, 2015.
