As a German Shepherd Mix, Could Now Be Killed As a “Wolf Hybrid!
A Colorado family has had their dog Capone for close to 10 years. The Abbatos rescued him from the Adams County Animal Shelter as a German Shepherd mix.
They moved to Aurora seven years ago, and for the first time in the seven years the family has lived there, Capone jumped the fence on February 24.
He was snared by Aurora Animal Control the same day and they won’t give him back to his loving home because they say he’s a wolf hybrid.
Is he a wolf hybrid?
The family’s veterinarian doesn’t think so.
Tracy Abbato, Capone's Mom, says, “I am 100 percent confident he is not a wolf, not a doubt in my mind.”
But Animal control says, based on Capone's mannerisms, behavior and physical characteristics, they suspect he is part wolf. So the city ran a DNA test to determine his breed on March 1.
If the DNA test finds that Capone is a wolf-hybrid, this makes the pup an exotic animal and illegal for the Abbatos to own. The Abbato family would then face violations of animal running at large, keeping an aggressive animal and keeping an exotic/wild animal.
