The windows were up and the engine was off when Gunner,
a 6-year-old K-9 officer, died after his handler left him in a squad car.
It happened in Southhaven, Mississippi.
Gunner’s handler, according to Police Chief Steve Pirtly, had returned to the office in the evening after undercover work and he, tragically, left his partner in the patrol car for two hours.
Chief Pirtle said Gunner's handler made the devastating discovery after he went to let the Lab-mix out for a bathroom break.
“When he went to the kennel which is inside their building he noticed he wasn't there and that's when he found him in the car,” Chief Pirtle said.
