The ‘Saddest Dog in the World,’ Lana touched the hearts of millions in 2015 when she was rejected by her adopted family. She will be EUTHANIZED in a week through no fault of her own unless she finds a forever or foster home.
She’s only three years old, but this sweet, shy dog has been uprooted far too many times in her short life and now, unless she finds someone who can love her for who she is, she is scheduled to die on May 20, 2017.
Born the runt of a large litter in Mexico, Lana arrives at a boarding kennel in Toronto. She’s a pup, no bigger than a human hand, and terrified of everything. She then spends short stints with various families in a foster program.
No one reports any issues with this little Lab mix until she’s “permanently adopted” at five months old. There’s one incident in which she snapped at her adoptive Mom at dinnertime—a guarding issue that resurfaces from her life as a runt who had to fight for food to survive. It never happens again, according to rescue worker Dahlia Ayoub of Mighty Mutts
While the incident happens only one time, her adoptive Mom has small children and doesn’t want to risk it happening again. So Lana is returned in October 2015.
This is when her “Saddest Dog in the World” photo goes viral.
“It’s almost like her world shut down,” Dahlia told The Dodo.
