(Video) Rejected from His Herd, Baby Elephant Beats Survival Odds with the Help of a Dog!

Ellie and Duma

Baby “Ellie” (or Unbuntu, his formal name) was only 2-weeks-old when he arrived at the Thula Thula Rhino Orphanage in in South Africa after being rejected by his herd.

He was a mess. He was suffering from large umbilical abscess, naval and joint problems and blood poisoning as a result of his umbilical infection..

It was touch and go, a veritable emotional roller coaster ride, as the staff, under the expert guidance of Rehabilitation and Crisis Response Expert Karen Trendler, cared for Ellie day and night for weeks on end.

“In about 99 percent [of the] cases, an umbilical abscess of that nature is fatal,” says Trendler. “Against all odds, this little elephant is still with us.”

A calf still dependent on milk, Ellie had another issue. He developed an intolerance to milk. After reaching out in all directions for a formula that would work, the staff had to concoct their own.
